Small Business Tips for Making your Life Easier

Breaking into the apparel industry can bring a tidal wave of stress and emotions for those running a small business. In a sea of success and failures, one thing we all can do is man up—buckle those belts and submit to the fact that we’ve all got to start from the bottom and work our way up. Luckily, Jayne Min, consultant slash stylist and founder of the hit website Stop It Right Now has some words of wisdom to help. The OC native gave some great advice to WhoWhatWear about staying professional, finding inspiration and looking good while you climb that ladder.

Pay Your Dues

At times, it’s easy to see others who’ve had success and assume that they must have had things handed to them on a silver platter. You spend hours raking your brain–trying to figure out how you can win big and start swimming in the fame and glory and the Instagram likes and the beautiful designer shoes…Okay, come back down to Earth. It’s important to know that these thoughts are toxic and counter-productive. “Don’t assume that there’s a fast track for everyone,” says Min. “But don’t get discouraged if things don’t unfold smoothly for you. Pay your dues, don’t cut corners, stay humble…and always ask questions.” Recognizing that others have worked hard for what they’ve achieved will inspire you to do the same!

Fuse Your Interests Together

Sometimes finding inspiration for design is as easy as looking to the other aspects of your life where you find passion. Art, biking, pop culture, cooking…we’ve had many customers who now run hugely successful children’s lines because they were so sparked by being a parent! “Growing up, the only other thing I was into besides making clothes was skateboarding,” explains Min. “My two interests—skate and fashion—inevitably fused into a career designing apparel in the skate industry.” Finding others with the same interests and experiences as you is a great way to make sales because your customers will be able to relate to your brand identity. In these retail-saturated times, the only way to effectively create a lifestyle brand that appeals to the masses is to serve a customer base that already exists!

Always be Clocked in

Being your own boss, it’s easy to fudge your work schedule a little bit, or work less consistent hours because, well, hey you’re the boss! But a better strategy for success is to set specific hours and stay focused. Min’s quick tip: swap out the clock on your phone for a classic, dependable watch. “You look at your phone for the time, but then there’s a notification, then your friend sends you an article, and next thing you know, you’ve already forgotten why you grabbed your phone in the first place.” She’s right—we’re all guilty and this little morsel of advice will save hours of lost time. Its common sense that eliminating distractions will keep you on task–and the phone is probably our biggest downfall. Min’s picks: the Nixon Kensington Watch and the Nixon Bullet Watch.

Customer Spotlight: the You Night Cancer Survivor Runway Show

pink-stage

Creating tees for your charity event is a great way to help build a buzz around your organization and give back to your supporters! Our new friends at You Night recently created some awesome gear for their fashion runway show benefitting cancer survivors.

You Night is a Louisiana-based organization dedicated to bringing confidence and empowerment to cancer survivors through their You Night Empowering Experience program, which includes a community fashion show. As models in the show, participants are challenged “to examine their mental, emotional and physical state of mind after cancer” through therapeutic meet ups and stepping outside comfort zones. The program currently has a waiting list to join.

launch-party

Since 2013, You Night has gained recognition as a growing group of women who continue to fight against the devastating effects cancer can have on survivors and the community. The program’s holistic methods build lasting support and allow these women to forge life-long relationships.  Though the multi-faceted course eventually comes to an end, participants are left with a new set of life skills and a new outlook.

The You Night Cancer Survivor Runway Show is the main event that closes out the program. It’s hosted semiannually, with 100% of the proceeds going to “We Lift You Up,” a program that offers year-round services to survivors. This event strives to bring happiness and wellness back into the models’ lives by offering them a chance to shine in the spotlight, show off their self-esteem and prove to themselves and the world that they will not let cancer bring them down.

The event is made possible by their Legacy Partners and through collaborative business sponsorships. Professional salons, boutiques, restaurants, production companies and even model coaches are enlisted to bring their skills and services to the table—creating a one-of-a-kind community based celebration.

Cotton Heritage: A Lesson in Entrepreneurship

cotton-heritage-77790729

Some people seem to have entrepreneurship in their blood. Neeraj “Mickey” Sachdeva, CEO and founder of Cotton Heritage came by both his entrepreneurial sense and his understanding of textiles honestly.

The Sachdeva family has a strong tradition of working with textiles. Mickey was actually raised in a city, which is considered to be the capital of the knitwear garment industry in North India. And the family business, Roochi Traders, a leading distributor of sportswear and active wear, was founded by Mickey’s father, Vishwa Sachdeva, back in 1982, the year that the Sachdeva family came to the United States.

In a true immigrant success story, Vishwa landed in the US with only $25 in his pocket, and looked to textiles to help provide a living for the family. He started importing fabrics from Japan with the help of some relatives. Then in 1986, when the Japanese yen turned strong, and it was no longer profitable to import from Japan, Vishwa began selling garments to Indian shops in the Los Angeles area. It was a true family business. Mickey’s mother, Prem, would sew from 6 AM to midnight every day, making the clothes that Vishwa would later sell.  Both Mickey and his brother, Vikram (Vik), helped out with the family business when they weren’t busy with schoolwork.

hoodies

Mickey was only 14 when the family left India and moved to California, but it didn’t take him long before he jumped straight into American commerce.  First, he took on a newspaper route. Then he got a job washing recreational vehicles. He flipped hamburgers at Wendy’s, and worked as a cashier at Knott’s Berry Farm. He got a job at a General Motors plant and then as a bank teller. He was just a teenager, but Mickey already had had more jobs than most people twice his age. Mickey says that initial work experience was critical to his later success. “It gave me an insight into a lot of different things,” says Mickey. “How to deal with people, how to handle money, how businesses work.”

By 11th grade, Mickey, was anxious to take the jump from working for others to working for himself and so he began pressuring his father to let him take on a bigger role in the family clothing business. “But my dad, a typically Indian father, wanted me to concentrate on my education first,” says Mickey. “I was very persistent and told him I would bug him every day about it. So Mickey was put to the test.  He was dropped off at the Los Angeles flea market with a box of 24 dozen undergarments and told to sell them. Only seventeen, Mickey wasn’t given any instructions about how to make the sales, but he still managed to sell nearly all of the undergarments in the box, and the experience only whetted his appetite for more.

While enrolling in college, Mickey started selling garments out of the family garage. That small business grew and grew until finally a neighborhood complained about the large trucks showing up to the Sachdeva residence on nearly a daily basis. Instead of being defeated, the push out of the family garage gave Mickey the momentum to move to a real warehouse, an 800-square foot space in Santa Fe Springs, California.

Today, the company is based in a 110,000-square-foot warehouse in the City of Commerce, its
headquarters since 1996. The company also has distribution centers in New York and Miami, for a total of 165,000 square feet of warehouse space. A far cry from that initial start in the family garage.girls

And Cotton Heritage still remains true to the Indian heritage of the Sachdeva family. All the goods are manufactured in South East Asia and in other Eastern garment industry hubs. Because they can speak the language and understand the cultures of these countries, it makes it an easy place for the Cotton Heritage brand to be manufactured. Mickey says that these days, his only goal is to make clothes that he wants to wear. That means, using the best yarns and dyes possible and making sure that quality control is top notch.

This commitment to quality means that Cotton Heritage shirts are considered to be one of the best shirts for direct to garment printing. Mickey says that they achieve this by choosing the right quality yarns, knitting them tightly and then by choosing the right dyes and chemical suppliers and enzyme helps the product to create a flat and good surface for printability. They also use an enzyme wash to keep the clothes extremely soft (The enzyme removes all the impurities from the surface of the fabric and gives it a better appearance, surface, and hand feel.

Alternative Apparel Brand Bio

After getting fired from job working for pizza restaurant, Greg Alterman racked his brain to think of a way to make money. He was still in college, so he needed something that wouldn’t take too much time away from studies. He had an idea for an alternative version of the smiley face T-shirt–one with long hair, sunglasses, peace signs. Greg printed 72 of these shirts and sold all of them in one day. His shirt business was an instant success. He printed more t-shirts and began selling them around campus. After a minor fine or two, Greg quickly figured out the business and got the necessary license to begin producing a line of University of Florida products. By the time he graduated from college, he had a full-fledged business with eight employees.

Post-college, Greg moved home to Atlanta and 2627_flbegan manufacturing t-shirts for corporations using Hanes or Fruit of the Loom T-shirts. Unfortunately, Greg wished he could find a product with a fit similar to the thin, worn out ’70s shirts that filled his closet. When he couldn’t find those blanks on the market, he started manufacturing his own. He initially went to China, and through trial and error, found a factory that could make the kind of tee he was looking for. By the time, the 1996 Olympics came to Atlanta, Alterman was selling printed T-shirts and hats of his own designs. Other printers soon wanted in on his vintage-inspired t-shirts, and suddenly a new business opportunity presented its self. In 1996, Greg founded Alternative Apparel as a distribution company that would stock only high quality blank T-shirts.

It was a slow start–Alterman says that on some days, the phone wouldn’t even ring. But by continuing to increase its offerings with thermals, hoodiestank tops and even women’s dress styles, Alternative’s costumer base grew from simply selling blanks to embellishers, to catching the eye of retailers who wanted to stock their blanks for retail sale. Now, they even manufacture a popular blank hat line including styles such as the baseball cap, Fidel Cap and beanie.

Today, Alternative’s design studio and flagship stores are in Los Angeles, California while the corporate headquarters are in Atlanta, Georgia. While the company continues to expanding into the retail market, they still offer that perfectly fitted blank T-shirt for custom printi3110_flng. In addition to this, they have many trendy variations that demonstrate that the Alternative brand will continue to push the fashion boundaries of the blank T-shirt industry–including the Burnout Baseball  T, the Marathon Pullover, and the Destroyed-T.

In 2007, the company launched an eco-friendly lined called Alternative Earth. This line has the same vintage softness and fit that Alternative is known for but is manufactured using organic cotton, recycled polymers and low-impact dyes and softeners. A portion of the sales are even donated to a variety of environmental organizations. Some of the popular shirts include the EConscious heathered tees (styles EC3800 and EC1080) which are made from 60% organic cotton, and the AA1932 Boss V-neck tees made with low-impact dyes

Blankstyle.com sells a wide selection of Alternative Apparel and has the best price on the web!  Going the extra mile to provide the highest quality in production and design for premium blank t-shirts is what has set Alternative Apparel apart from the rest!

How to Design Custom T Shirts

Are you looking to create custom t shirts but have no idea where to start in designing one? Today I’m going to go over some t shirt design tips and design ideas to help you create custom apparel for maybe your baseball team, your family reunion, or maybe just for fun. Custom t shirts are a great for setting your group apart or just showing off your creativity.

Creating a Design

When designing t shirts, first you need to create and decide on a design. The design could be a logo, or maybe a team name. Many custom t shirt websites will have some pre-loaded images or fonts for you to use, but if you want to create an original t shirt design here are some tips and techniques to make the most out of your design.

  • Keep it simple – you want to get the point across without the design being overwhelming to the viewer. Stay focused on the purpose of the shirt and remember that less is more.
  • Avoid Color Overload – Try not to use to many different colors. Using to many colors could be distracting, or once again overwhelming. Try to stick to only using 2-4 colors, you could even use multiple shades of the same color to get get some contrast and variation in your design.
  • Simple Fonts – Just like with images, you want to keep your letters simple and easy to read. You can have a custom and creative font but if no one can read it then it fails in its purpose.
  • Limit Text – A little bit of text is great, maybe a quote, a team or company name, or perhaps a slogan. But if you write a lot of text on a t shirt then people glancing at it won’t be able to get the full affect of the t shirt. Your shirt needs to get the point across in a single glance.

colors

Design Ideas

Are you stumped on a design for your custom t shirt? Here are some strategies for coming up with that perfect design idea. First think of the purpose of the t shirt. When you think of it what are the first things that come to mind. For example, for a family reunion you may think of a family tree, which could lead to an interesting tree based design. Your next step in coming up with t shirt design ideas would be research. What are other, similar groups or events doing for their t shirts? Maybe look into the history or read articles on topics similar to the purpose of your design, see if it sparks some design ideas. Instead of boring, plain stars on your astronomy club’s t shirt, have a super nova or a black hole. Be creative and think outside of the box.

Custom T Shirt Design Tips

Now that you have a design it’s time to create a custom t shirt. First you have to decide what kind of shirt you would like to have. There are polos, v necks, crew necks, and many more. After you’ve chosen the best style of shirt for your t shirt design, you now must choose what color the shirt will be. Try to find a color that looks good with the design that you created. Try to avoid shirts that are similar to the colors in your design. For example if your design has primarily dark red in it, then you may want to avoid shirts where the design will be surrounded by dark red because the design will blend in with the shirt. You want your design to stand out so people take notice of it. You’ll also need to choose where your design will go on the shirt. Will it be in an upper or lower corner of the shirt, or maybe on the sleeve, on the stomach?

t shirt with design

Custom t shirts can be useful for many different things in many different ways. A custom t shirt design will set you all apart, make you more unified and easy to recognize, for maybe your softball team, business or family trip. I’d love to hear your t shirt design ideas or see custom t shirts you’ve made!
